BACKGROUND

West Pennard CofE Primary School is nestled in the countryside near Glastonbury, Somerset. The school serves children aged 4 to 11 and is committed to providing a nurturing and stimulating environment where every child can reach their full potential. Learning goes beyond the classroom; children are encouraged to explore, be curious, and develop both academically and socially.

The school community values creativity, wellbeing, and inclusivity, ensuring that each child feels supported and inspired. It’s a space where children flourish and build confidence.

PROJECT BRIEF

Weather exposure caused the original trim trail to deteriorate over time. The school therefore understood the importance of designing the new play equipment for durability. Using metal posts to prevent damage from damp soil and extend its lifespan.

The additional equipment also needed to be accessible to the whole school, supporting physical development while also encouraging decision-making skills and boosting confidence.

THE DESIGN PROCESS

West Pennard Primary was able to move forward with their second outdoor play project, again choosing Fawns, thanks to generous donations and school funds. To ensure the project reflected the children’s interests, the school actively involved them in the process. Giving them the opportunity to choose the equipment they wanted.

Fawns’ local School Grounds Consultant met with Mr Wheat, the headteacher, to discuss plans and the intended learning outcomes for the new area, ensuring the design would support physical development, confidence, and decision-making. The school also aimed to make the most of its beautiful grounds by creating additional play spaces that framed the iconic view of Glastonbury Tor.

A detailed design and quotation were then presented to the school. The school approved the final design, bringing them one step closer to completing their new trim trail. Enhancing play opportunities for all pupils in the school.
