BACKGROUND
Situated in Oldham, a historic Lancashire town renowned for its 19th-century textile boom, Crompton Primary School carries its own powerful motto “Learning Without Limits.”
Their motto reflects the school’s commitment to providing a nurturing and stimulating environment where children are encouraged to reach their full potential, both inside and outside the classroom.
PROJECT BRIEF
The school recognised that a dedicated play space was necessary; that would improve outdoor physical activity for all the children, whilst fostering social interaction and imaginative play.
Once a potentially suitable location within the schools’ grounds was established, it was some expert knowledge and recommendations the school required from a specialist playground company.
THE DESIGN PROCESS
Through the amazing efforts of the PTA and their fundraising, the school had secured the necessary funding to transform the grassed area into an exciting outdoor play space.
The Fawns Outdoor Play Consultant met with the Headteacher and School Office Manager for an in-depth discussion about the school’s vision for the play space. This initial meeting involved listening to the schools’ ideas and understanding the individual needs of every child within the school. Creating a space that would encourage active play, stimulate creativity, and provide opportunities for outdoor learning across different curriculum areas was crucial.
Following the consultation, a design proposal was created of the new play space to help the school visualise the new play space. The design incorporated all the schools’ requirements and desired learning outcomes from the first meeting and after some minor changes a final design was agreed.
