Two young children in school uniforms and red cardigans play on a wooden climbing frame outdoors. One child is holding a rope whilst the other stands on the logs. Four young children play with a wooden water table and slides outdoors on a playground with grass and a wooden fence in the background. A young girl in a school uniform plays hopscotch on a colourful outdoor playground, balancing on one foot with her arms raised.
Key Outcomes
  • Children are more confident, focused, and engaged, benefiting from the abundance of space that allows them to explore and interact freely.
  • A safe new play area provides a comfortable and inclusive space for all children to move and play.
  • Designed to spark curiosity and creativity, the playground encourages EYFS children to collaborate, share ideas, and immerse themselves in imaginative play.
  • It now supports all 7 areas of learning, ensuring children develop holistically across physical, social, emotional, and cognitive domains.

Customer Feedback

Fawn’s contractors were very flexible and gave very good advice from the planning stage to installation. They understood our needs and listened to our vision.

J. Taylor – Deputy Headteacher & Early Years Lead

BACKGROUND

St Mary’s CE (Aided) Primary School is situated in the market town of Chipping Norton, West Oxfordshire. The school is guided by a vision to lay strong foundations and offer opportunities for all to be inspired and thrive within a nurturing community. Its core values: wisdom, integrity, compassion, patience, and joy are reflected in everything it does.

PROJECT BRIEF

It became clear that the outdoor area for Nursery and Reception children was no longer inspiring or meeting their developmental needs. The space needed more opportunities for imaginative play, physical growth, and exploration across the seven areas of learning.

The school wanted to transform this tired environment into an exciting, vibrant space that would spark curiosity. Encouraging creativity, and helping children build social skills through play.

THE DESIGN PROCESS

With the School-Based Nursery (SBN) grant in place, the school wanted to make the most of this opportunity to create an inviting and safe outdoor play area for their Nursery and Reception children.

The local consultant met with Headteacher, Mrs McQueen and Deputy Headteacher, Mrs Taylor to discuss the school’s vision and priorities for the space. Together, they developed a design that reflected the seven areas of learning, ensuring that every child would have access to stimulating and inclusive playground equipment.

Once the concept was refined, the final design and quotation were agreed upon, setting the project in motion.
