BACKGROUND

Kimbolton and Stonely Parish Council supports the communities of Kimbolton & Stonely in Cambridgeshire, helping look after local spaces, community projects, and planning. The council also helps protect the area’s historic character, including well-known landmarks such as Kimbolton Castle.

PROJECT BRIEF

The council recognised that the existing playpark was outdated and no longer inspiring for local children. Their aim was to create a welcoming, community-focused space for all children to enjoy, including those with additional needs following the arrival of a disabled child in the village.

They were keen to replace existing equipment with new, engaging features that reflect local character, which was the inspiration for the castle and train. The vision was for a vibrant “WOW” space that appealed to all ages.

Inclusivity was a key priority, with a strong desire for at least one accessible play pieces, along with suitable surfacing where needed.

THE DESIGN PROCESS

Funding for the project was supported by a combination of the council’s Community Infrastructure Levy (CIL) funds, National Lottery support, and additional local government CIL contributions. With the existing play area over 32 years old and well used, the council worked with a playground consultant to explore how the space could be transformed into something more exciting and inclusive for the community.

Following discussions with the councillor and chair, a design and quotation were created to transform the area into a vibrant “WOW” play space for children and families throughout the year. The plan also included inclusive equipment so that children of all abilities could enjoy the space.

The council were impressed with the design concept, quality of materials, and competitive pricing, and as a result chose Fawns to carry out the final installation.
