It’s a fantastic resource for supporting well-being and concentration and the pupils love it!

T. Challenor, Headteacher

BACKGROUND

Dovecotes Primary School in Wolverhampton opened in 1978 as separate infant and junior schools, later merging in 1995 to form the current primary school.

The staff are proud of the school’s warm, inclusive atmosphere, where pupils are supported to thrive both academically and personally. They promote the message that “in a world where you can be anything, be kind,” reflected in the school’s core expectations: Kind Hands, Kind Feet, Kind Words.

PROJECT BRIEF

The school identified the need to create a purpose-built sensory space to support children in taking effective movement breaks throughout the school day. The aim was to establish a calm and structured environment where children can safely self-regulate, regain focus, and address their individual sensory needs through access to suitable equipment and targeted activities.

THE DESIGN PROCESS

The school recognised the need to redevelop an outdoor area, so Fawns’ School Grounds Consultant met with Miss Challenor, the Headteacher, to discuss potential plans. The school council was invited to share their ideas for the space, involving the children in the decisions.

The area had already been levelled, making it ready for development. Drawing on the feedback from the discussions, the consultant created a design and quotation, which were presented to the school.

After review, a final design was approved, allowing the redevelopment project to move forward.
