Wooden playground structure with slides, climbing wall, and bridge on artificial grass, surrounded by a metal fence in a residential neighbourhood.
Key Outcomes
  • A new play area that has transformed the outdoor space, creating a fun and exciting environment that children can use all year round.
  • The children are now enjoying playtimes more than ever, leading to a noticeable improvement in behaviour and creating a happier, more positive playground environment.
  • The play equipment provides an appropriate level of challenge, helping children build confidence, develop key physical skills, and prepare for the transition to larger play equipment.

Customer Feedback

We were extremely pleased with the proposed structure from Fawns with a variety of different levels of challenge on the one piece of play equipment. The new area is much more exciting for the children to play in, and the new equipment is used a great deal, encouraging physical activity as well as improving their gross motor development. It has also greatly enhanced the first impressions of the school as you arrive which is a wonderful bonus.

C. Muller, School Business Manager

BACKGROUND

Located in Horsham, St John’s Catholic Primary School serves children aged 4–11 and is rooted in a strong Catholic ethos. The school provides a welcoming, inclusive environment where every child is valued, encouraged to thrive, and supported to achieve success. Promoting a strong sense of community, belonging, and social responsibility. While also ensuring children feel safe, happy, and engaged in their learning.

PROJECT BRIEF

Following the removal of a tree, the school identified an opportunity to create an engaging play space for the KS1 children. The aim was to introduce age-appropriate equipment that would encourage the children to be more active during playtimes. While supporting physical development and social skills.

The school explored a range of equipment options and worked with the Friends of St John’s Fundraising (PTA), who agreed to fund the project.

THE DESIGN PROCESS

Fawns’ local playground consultant met with the School Business Manager, Mrs Muller, to discuss the school’s plans for the newly available space.

Following the consultation, a design and detailed quotation was presented to the school for review. The proposed layout planned to maximise the available area, creating an environment to encourage active play, exploration, and enjoyment for the younger children of the school.

Drawing on expertise, Fawns recommended the most suitable equipment for the space. Ensuring the final design met the school’s objectives; providing engaging and age-appropriate play opportunities for the KS1 children.
