BACKGROUND

Downsview Primary & Nursery School is situated in the town of Croydon in South London. The school maintains six core values: Love, Cooperation, Resilience, Diversity, Responsibility, Trust, and Respect. These values are embedded in everyday school life, with the governors and staff committed to fostering a happy, respectful, and nurturing learning environment.

PROJECT BRIEF

The school recognised that the EYFS outdoor space needed a significant update to better support the children’s development.

The school’s aim was to create an engaging, versatile environment that achieved the 7 areas of learning. Ensuring every child has equal opportunities to explore and benefit from the new equipment.

The school sought to encourage curiosity, creativity, physical development, and social interaction, providing a stimulating outdoor space that enhanced the learning experiences outside the classroom walls.

THE DESIGN PROCESS

The school had secured funding through its capital allocation, ensuring that the necessary resources were available to support the planned development. To guide the project, the local outdoor play consultant met with the Early Years teacher to discuss and refine the school’s vision for the new Early Years Foundation Stage area.

With a clear concept established, a detailed design and quotation were presented to the school, outlining a range of equipment and features carefully selected to support all seven areas of learning.

With a long-standing partnership with Fawns spanning over ten years, the school chose Fawns to deliver the project.

The final design and quotation were approved, and the new playground project could move forward. Bringing the school a step closer to a vibrant, safe, and fun-filled space for the EYFS children.
