Key Outcomes

An engaging school playground designed for Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2.
The children have an outdoor play area that helps them develop balance, coordination, and gross motor skills through physical activity.
There has been a significant positive change in children’s behaviour, with older children becoming more active and supporting younger children on the playground equipment.
A durable, all-weather outdoor learning and play space that children can enjoy all year round.

BACKGROUND

The Flitch Green Academy is a primary school situated in the rural town of Dunmow in Essex. Central to the school’s vision is a strong commitment to providing rich, creative learning experiences that both inspire and challenge pupils. Enabling children to achieve their full academic potential.

Alongside high expectations for achievement, the school actively promotes core values of honesty, kindness, and respect. Ensuring these principles underpin daily life within the academy.

PROJECT BRIEF

The Flitch Green Academy recognised that the existing play equipment was no longer suitable and required more engaging alternatives.

The brief called for a versatile climbing frame specifically designed to encourage open-ended play. Including bars at varying heights, role-play areas, and a trim trail to help develop balance, coordination, as well as gross motor skills. Inclusivity was a priority, with equipment designed to meet the needs of all children. Providing opportunities for every pupil to play, explore, and challenge themselves.

THE DESIGN PROCESS

With the school’s clear vision Fawns’ Outdoor Playground Consultant met with the Vice Chair of Governors to carry out an assessment of the existing outdoor area. During the consultation focused on understanding the school’s requirements. Discussing aspirations for the space, and exploring a range of design possibilities that could best support pupils’ learning, play, and development.

Following these initial discussions, a playground design was created and presented alongside a detailed quotation. Giving the school an overview of the proposed layout, equipment, and costs.

With the amazing fundraising efforts of Friends of Flitch Green and a small number of adjustments to ensure it fully met the school’s needs and expectations, a final design was agreed upon.
