INTRODUCTION
Markyate Village School and Nursery is in the cathedral city of St Albans.
The school has a very simple, yet impactful motto: Together, we Aspire, Strive and Achieve. They are fully committed to everyone in the school community “striving to provide an environment where children are actively encouraged to reach their full potential both academically and socially.”
GOALS
Having suffered many winters where certain areas of the outdoor space were becoming waterlogged, slippery, and uneven resulting in the entire space being completely unusable; the school was very keen to provide a new area for the whole school to boost physical development.
THE DESIGN PROCESS
After several years of saving and fundraising the school invited our local Play Consultant Paul Hales to discuss plans and ideas. He advised the school on how best to develop the space that would support the children’s physical development as well as their confidence, physical activity, and technical skill level.
Discussions between the school and Paul resulted in a design proposal that was perfect for the new area and the children.

KEY RESULTS
- A Multi Use Games Area that provides the opportunity for physical activity.
- Fully enclosed, safe space for children to develop their skills in a variety of sports.
- Utilisation of a previously unusable space of playing field.
- A perfect space that can be used all year round.
