We wanted to let you know that we are very happy with the way the project has been handled. Thank you to the workforce for working around us in a professional matter to limit any inconvenience – it was much appreciated. The children and staff are already enjoying having this facility – its great!

BACKGROUND

Markyate Village School and Nursery is in the cathedral city of St Albans.

The school has a very simple, yet impactful motto: Together, we Aspire, Strive and Achieve. They are fully committed to everyone in the school community striving to provide an environment where children are actively encouraged to reach their full potential both academically and socially.

PROJECT BRIEF

After experiencing several challenging winters, the school found that large areas of their outdoor space were regularly becoming waterlogged, slippery, and uneven. This not only limited how the space could be used, but at times made it completely inaccessible for the children. As a result, opportunities for outdoor learning, physical education, and active play were significantly reduced during wetter months.

Recognising the impact this was having on pupils’ physical development and overall wellbeing, the school was keen to invest in a long-term solution. Their goal was to create a durable, all-weather area that could be used safely throughout the year. Ensuring that every child had consistent access to high-quality outdoor activity.

THE DESIGN PROCESS

After several years of saving and fundraising the school invited our local Play Consultant Paul Hales to discuss plans and ideas. He advised the school on how best to develop the space that would support the children’s physical development. As well as taking into consideration boosting confidence, physical activity, and technical skill level.

Discussions between the school and Paul resulted in a design proposal that was perfect for the new area and the children.
