BACKGROUND
Masham CE Primary School is located in the vibrant, friendly market town of Masham in North Yorkshire. The school offers a warm and welcoming environment where every child is valued and encouraged to reach their full potential. Priding itself on cherishing their core values; Kindness, Courage, Respect, Excellence and Perseverance.
PROJECT BRIEF
Masham CE Primary School identified that the current outdoor space for their Key Stage 1 and EYFS pupils did not provide the engaging and inspiring learning experience required to meet the National Curriculum.
The project brief was to create a covered free flow space, encouraging and developing the schools outdoor learning opportunities. In conjunction with the EYFS 7 areas of learning, it was important that new outdoor space was easily accessible for the children all year round, as well as offering a space for teachers to leave learning resources outside under a covered space, removing the need to pack everything away at the end of each day.
THE DESIGN PROCESS
Recognising the need for a new free flow shelter, the Leeds Diocese generously provided funding to the school for the enhancement of the outdoor learning area.
Having read similar case studies from other schools showcased on the Fawns website, the school decided to contact Fawns to assist with their project.
The Outdoor Play Consultant met with the Executive Headteacher and discussed ideas and plans, providing advice on how to optimise the outdoor learning environment. This collaborative process involved a survey of the existing space and exploring potential solutions that would best suit the needs of the staff and pupils.
Following this, a design proposal, complete with a quotation, was presented to the school.
Once the final designs were shared with the key stakeholders and approved, the school were keen to proceed quickly with their exciting new free flow outdoor learning area.
