Berrymede Junior School

Project Descriptions

As part of their playground regeneration, Berrymede Junior School invited Playtime by Fawns to design an activity and sheltered seating area for their Key Stage 2 playground and climbing area for Key Stage 1.

We were invited back to the school to see the results and have a chat with some of the Year 6’s about how the new area had enhanced playtime. The 13m long bouldering wall utilised existing wall space and gave the children a unique opportunity to test their grip and grasp skills and improve their hand and foot to eye coordination skills.

Monica, one pupil, told us that they had invented all sorts of other games involving the wall including “last person standing” and impromptu games utilising the different coloured hand and foot holds.

In addition to the bouldering wall, Fawns created a shady sheltered area with benches for the other children to watch and wait their turn, this involved creating a ramp to the area and constructing a new wall from recycled bricks, along with a splash of colour from the red wetpour surfacing. The work was carried out during term time without impacting on everyday school life, and to quote Monica “playtime is so much more interesting”!
