School Eco Warriors Make Playtime Green!
In their efforts to 'go green' children at St Stephens Primary School are working towards gaining a prestigious Eco-Schools award - while enjoying their new 'environmentally friendly' adventure playground equipment.
With the Government wanting all schools to be sustainable by 2020 Eco-Schools is an international award programme that guides schools on their sustainable journey.
Under Eco-School?s three tier award system St Stephens has already gained accreditation with the silver and bronze flags and the children are now working towards the final, and most prestigious, 'Green Flag' award.
In order to gain the award all elements of the school must work to a sustainable standard - even playtime! Children at the school have formed a dedicated team of 'Eco Warriors' who were involved in the recent installation of new playground equipment. Fawns Recreational Services were chosen to install the equipment and they liaised directly with the 'Eco Warriors' to create an adventure trim trail made exclusively from a range of recycled materials.
Headteacher Mrs Hughes commented; 'The children are working hard towards their Eco-Schools award and we were very pleased with the way Craig Longworth, the Fawns Play Consultant, was adaptable to their requests. As a result the children have got a trim trail which not only provides them with hours of fun - but with the use of materials which will help them towards their Green Flag award.'
"We found the team at Fawns to be very efficient - the installation of the equipment was very quick and had very little knock on effect for the school. We have also received a lot of positive feedback from parents."
